Many of us can identify feeling burned out from too much news, too many Zoom calls, or too many demands.  However, when we’re burned out from work, it’s hard to find meaning or joy, or to feel fully functional.  We may feel drained, empty, irritable, or useless. We’re also likely to blame ourselves for feeling this way. Studies show that 25-75% of workers around the world experience burnout symptoms.  This wide range of  burnout is reported in health care professionals, teachers, caregivers, business owners and employees. Chances are you or someone you know has experienced burnout.

Burnout happens when our work-life balance gets out of whack, usually through no fault of our own.  We’re just doing the best we can. Common causes of burnout include excessive workload, lack of support, unfairness at the workplace, and moral distress. People who care deeply about their work are also more likely to get burned out, as are those who base their self-worth on their work, have a tendency to sacrifice themselves, or criticize themselves when things go wrong. 

Fortunately, self-compassion is a helpful antidote to burnout, and there are many research studies that support this claim. There is also an empirically-supported training for healthcare workers derived from the Mindful Self-compassion program—Self-Compassion for Healthcare Communities.  Recently, Kristin Neff and Chris Germer wrote a new book, to be published in September 2024, titled Mindful Self-Compassion for Burnout: Tools to Help You Heal and Recharge When You’re Wrung Out by Stress.  

This 3-hour experiential workshop consists of talks, exercises, and discussion.  Participants will learn quick and powerful self-compassion tools to alleviate the symptoms of burnout. Professionals will be able to apply key principles and practices to prevent and reduce burnout in themselves and their organizations.

  • What is Self-Compassion?

    Self-compassion involves responding in the same supportive and understanding way you would with a good friend when you have a difficult time, fail, or notice something you don’t like about yourself. There are three elements which comprise self-compassion: Self-kindness vs. self-judgment, common humanity vs. isolation, and mindfulness vs. over-identification.

    In daily life, self-compassion involves noticing when we’re having a hard time, and rather than judging and criticizing ourselves, we respond to our pain with care and kindness, just as we would a dear friend. There’s now an impressive and growing body of research demonstrating that relating to ourselves in a kind, friendly manner is essential for emotional wellbeing. And though self-compassion is not often the first response for many of us during moments of personal struggle, this skill can be trained, even for those of us who did not learn it as children.

Our programs are designed to teach participants the tools needed to develop and cultivate a mindfulness and self-compassion practice.
